![]() ![]() He went there, did some recon and noticed that the "crew" all wore red hats and red shirts and carried clip boards. My uncle did almost that exact thing in HI. I never heard a peep, never received a bill, nothing. I immediately started it up and quietly drove out with my headlights off, the gate opened, and I was home free (after retrieving my bike). The guy in the office got up and headed to the restroom. The tow driver left, and about 5 minutes later I got my opportunity. I made my way around to where my truck was parked, quietly got in, and waited. I observed a few entries before I decided to sprint in behind a van being towed, and hid in the wonderfully unlit lot until they were busy with paperwork. The office was manned by one person who looked completely uninterested in life, and incoming trucks were maybe one every 10-15 minutes. ![]() The incoming trucks had to use a punch panel to open the gate, but it automatically opened on exit via a ground loop. I was a little pissed, so I biked to the tow yard at around 2am and carefully observed their procedures. (short version) My truck was illegally towed one night, and I was rather poor at the time. Police were there to make sure it was smooth, got the car but they did try and pull some cleaning out the vehicle for $50.00 which was (inappropriate term)." I went down there with 3 guys all of us had our guns, called 911 enroute, and let them know what was going to happen. If you go down there be prepared to deal with guys that are going to try and scare the (inappropriate term) out of you. I called the police went down with my gun, and the cops were at first like it's a civil matter, then told the tow guy to bill me. ex: your car gets towed go to the tow company and when they demand "CASH" from you tell them to screw off and that you are invoking your Lien Law Rights and they have to give you your car and you don't pay a thing." If your car is towed Arizona has a "Lien Law".Meaning: a tow company can tow your car but CAN NOT legally hold it. "As a wife of a former tow truck driver I have a few in side scoops I'd love to share. I never received a bill, and my four friends that took my advice and did this as well, never got a bill either.ĮDIT: In Arizona, it's called a "Lien Law", and other states may have similar laws. They won't even bother writing it up, because you are probably the one person a year that beat them this way. Don't let the officer leave until you have your vehicle.Ħ) Once you have your vehicle, thank the officer for his/her time.ħ) Drive away, content in the knowledge that you will most likely never see a bill, because the towing company knows that you will never pay it anyway, since you know that you can simply contest the bill and force them to chase you. Then offer your ID.ĥ) They will then do it. Tell them you'll wait.Ĥ) When the officer gets there, tell them again in front of the officer that you would like your vehicle relinquished immediately, and that you'll be happy to have them send you a bill. They'll tell you they're busy, but if you'll wait for an officer, they'll put the request through. Ask them to come down to the towing company and help you enforce the law. They'll tell you the same thing I just told you."Ģ) Call the police. They'll call your bluff and say "Go ahead. Period."ġ) Inform them that you know the law, and if they don't relinquish your vehicle you'll call the police to make them do it. They will say they don't operate that way. Of course, they will refuse to do this immediately after you inform them of your knowledge of said law. You can drive away with your car WITHOUT pre-paying their towing fee once you've shown them your ID. They MUST give you your car after taking down your info. ![]() Here's a great tip for everyone, I've done this myself and I can attest that it absolutely works.Īrizona has a law (I understand that most states have similar laws) that states that a towing company MUST give you your car if you show them a valid ID (like your state drivers license) and request that they send you a bill.
